Baking soda is one of the most commonly-used household cleaners, but it’s also one of the most underrated and underutilized.

There are so many reasons why you should be using baking soda more often in your home, and there’s sure to be at least one use for almost every kind of cleaning (and non-cleaning) task you’re trying to accomplish.

It could easily be one of – if not the – most versatile substances you will ever bring into your home.

Reasons to use baking soda:

  • It’s 100% natural and organic. Baking soda is simply a type of salt that results from the combination of naturally-occurring minerals and substances – sodium carbonate and carbon dioxide. It’s completely harmless to you, your pets, your children, your clothes, and anything else that could ever come into contact with it. At Universal Cleaning Company, we firmly believe in only using all-natural cleaning solutions, so this is a big one for us!
  • It’s powerful and versatile. Baking soda has been used for many years in cooking, cleaning, personal hygiene, and medication. It is even used to tame grease fires! Some of the toughest cleaning jobs can be accomplished with baking soda with more ease than expensive and toxic chemical cleaners. There’s a reason baking soda is used for so many things – it works.
  • It’s cheap. See the picture below for reference – $1.24 for one pound of the stuff? I’d say that’s more than affordable, given the many uses it has to offer! That 16oz box of baking soda should last quite a while, too.

Clean with Baking Soda in the Home!

Now that we’ve covered the basics of why you should use baking soda in the home, let’s get move on to how you can use baking soda in your home. Specifically, we’re going to focus on its cleaning abilities as we list ten ways to use baking soda for cleaning in your home. Now, whip out your notepad and get ready to take some notes!

1. Deodorize your refrigerator. Simply open a box of baking soda and place it in your refrigerator. The baking soda will absorb any nasty smells coming from your fridge and will leave your refrigerator smelling like new!

2. Clean your tiles. Clean and brighten tile grout with just baking soda and water! Mix 3 cups of baking soda with 1 cup of water. Use this solution to scrub your grout clean with a sponge. Let it sit for a few minutes and then rinse your tiles clean.

3. Degrease your stove top. Generously sprinkle baking soda around the top of the stove. Next, spray hot water (boiling hot if possible) over the top. Be sure there is enough hot water to dissolve the baking soda without making it run. Let the solution soak for about 30 minutes before scrubbing it clean.

4. Unclog your drains. Before attempting to unclog your drain, remove as much water as you can from the clogged sink or bathtub. Dump 1 cup of baking soda down the clogged drain. Next, pour a cup of household vinegar down the drain. Plug the drain with a stopper and let it sit for 30 minutes. When the 30 minutes is up, take out the plug and pour a full pot of hot water down the drain.

5. Clean your oven. Is your over covered in burned food and grease? Sprinkle the inside with water. Then, cover it with a mixture of 1 cup of baking soda and 1/3 cup of salt. Next, spray your oven again with water. Leave the solution overnight and wipe your oven clean the next day.

6. Clean your toilet. Put 1 cup of baking soda into the toilet bowl. Follow this by adding 1 cup of household vinegar. Allow the mixture to fizz in the toilet bowl for about 10 minutes. Finish the job by using a toilet brush to scrub toilet clean with ease.

7. Deodorize your carpets. Sprinkle one box of baking soda over your carpets in each room of your house. Leave it for 30 minutes. Next, vacuum your carpets. Not only will your rooms be deodorized. but the baking soda will also clean your vacuum and freshen your vacuum bag (if you use one).

8. Clean the microwave. Add two teaspoons of baking soda to a bowl of water. Place the bowl of water and baking soda in the microwave. Heat the mixture for 3 to 5 minutes, depending on the level of grime in your microwave. When you’re finished heating the mixture, keep the door closed to allow the moisture and steam to work. Carefully remove the bowl. Next, use a warm, wet cloth to wipe down the inside of the microwave. The grime inside of your microwave should wipe off easily. As a bonus, the baking soda will also act as a deodorizer.

9. Deodorize your dishwasher. Sprinkle baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher. Let the baking soda sit over night. The next day, use a damp sponge or cloth to scrub the baking soda into the inside walls and the door of the dishwasher. Clean out most of the powder and run a full cycle with no dishes in the dishwasher to remove the remaining baking soda. You can also use one cup of baking soda in your dishwasher while it is empty, and then run it on the rinse cycle.

10. Clean your walls. Remove crayon scribbles and scuffs from your walls with a simple baking soda and water mixture. Mix baking soda and water into a paste, then use it to gently scrub the marks with a sponge or cloth.
